Marma

Marma pressure points are junctions in the body usually close to the skin surface of important nerves with muscles, veins ,bones and joints. It is said that marmas are constituted of six vital elements, Soma(sleshma) ,Marutha(Vata), teja(Pita) and the three mental types : rajas, tamas and satva. The stimulation of marma points improves pranic flow by limiting stagnalion in the body after a marma point treatment the nervous system is calm and revitalized an essential factor for maintaining mind body balance.

A marma defined as an anatomical area where arteries, tendons, flesh, veins and joints meet to form the location of life. It has a secret and significant valves at these junctions. The anatomical areas where structures pulsate and where pain exists can be named as marma.

Marma chikitsa

Marma chikitsa is a significant aspect of the Ayurvedic treatments. Marmas are specific points on the body where the application of pressure induces the flow of vital energy(prana)along a complex system of substle channels called Nadis. Based on the knowledge enumerated in Dhanurveda ayurveda recognizes about 107 therapeutic points. The injury to some of these lethal marma points can lead to intent death. Abhyangam / Uzhichil is widely applied in the treatment of marmas.

Healing through Marma abhyangam affects the chakras, physical health and the doshas. The purpose of a Marma Abhyangam is to stimulate the various body organs and systems. Marma therapy focuses on energing the body to relieve occupational illness and stress related diseases.

Ayurveda & Marma

Marma chikitsa is related more to kalaripayatu. Marma literally means a key point. According to kalaripayattu knowledge , there are 108 marmas. Twelve among them are extremely critical and are called Padumarmam. Immediate death will be the result if any of these points are injured. There are 96 other marmas, collectively known as Thodu marma not serious as padumarmam.

A shock to a marma can be overcome by applying controlled negative shocks. In marma treatment the injuries to marmas are treated with Ayurvedic Medicines for Uzhichil.
